Understanding your UK pay in 2025/26
From gross salary to the figure that lands in your bank
Most UK employees are paid through PAYE, where HMRC's Income Tax and National Insurance are deducted at source by your employer. For 2025/26, the standard personal allowance is £12,570. Earnings above this are taxed at 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. The personal allowance tapers by £1 for every £2 earned over £100,000.
On top of Income Tax, employees pay Class 1 National Insurance at 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above. Workplace pension contributions — particularly via salary sacrifice — reduce both your taxable income and the NI base, so small percentage uplifts can have a meaningful impact on net pay. Graduates also see student loan deductions on income above their plan threshold (Plan 1, 2, 4 or PGL).
The calculators below apply HMRC's published bands and thresholds so you can quickly compare offers, model a pay rise or bonus, test pension contributions and convert between salary and hourly rates with confidence.
